After a 7-9 season in 2015, the Oakland Raiders were expected to be improved last season, but they weren’t expected to be as good as they were. Led by third year quarterback Derek Carr, Oakland went 12-5, making it to the playoffs for the first time since they lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Super Bowl in 2002.
Heading into the playoffs, the Raiders were considered one of the favorites to win the AFC, but a season ending injury to Carr in the second to last game of the season killed any legitimate chance they might have had. Without Carr, the Raiders lost to the Houston Texans in the playoffs, ending their dreams of a Super Bowl run.
Carr is expected to be ready for the start of the season, and the addition of Marshawn Lynch in the offseason, makes the Raiders a favorite in the AFC once more.
In this article I’m going to look at the various futures bets you can make on the Oakland Raiders 2017 season. I’ll look at their Super Bowl odds, as well as their odds to win the NFC East, total wins and their week 1 game.
I’ll be using the odds from Bovada.lv, our top rated sportsbook for American bettors (full review here). The odds may vary at different sites.
To Win Super Bowl
- Raiders +1200
Oakland is tied with Dallas, Pittsburgh, and Seattle for the third best odds to win the Super Bowl. While most people believe the Patriots (+375) and Steelers have the best chance to win the AFC, Oakland is a legitimate threat to both teams because they are very good on both sides of the ball. The addition of Lynch also gives them a much needed power game that will come in handy against teams like the Patriots and Steelers, who had trouble stopping the run last year. Since Oakland is expected to be as good as they were last year, if not better, they are a sharp bet at +1200.
To Win AFC West
- Denver Broncos +210
- Kansas City Chiefs +250
- Los Angeles Chargers +600
- Oakland Raiders +150
Even though the Raiders are the favorites to win their division, it will not be an easy task because the AFC West was the toughest division in the NFL last season and will likely be again this year. The Broncos finished the season 9-7 despite losing quarterback Peyton Manning to retirement. This year, their young quarterbacks have some experience under their belt, and the defense is still one of the best in the league, so expect them to put up a fight for the division crown.
The Chiefs, who won the division last season, lost leading receiver Jeremy Maclin in the offseason as well as running back Jamaal Charles. However, Andy Reid is a coach that knows how to get the best out of his players so expect the Chiefs to be in the mix for the division crown as well.
Regular Season Total Wins
- Over 10 -105
- Under 10 -125
Oakland has a favorable schedule, and will face five teams that made the playoffs last year, including the Patriots. Despite winning 12 games last year, they are likely going to lose four or five games this year so the over is a safe bet.
Raiders Week 1 Betting Lines
The Raiders will open the season on the road against the Tennessee Titans. The point spread for the game is even, meaning you have to pick the winner. The over/under on total points scored is 52, at -110.
The Raiders beat Tennessee at home last year, and I see the same thing happening again this year. However, I expect the game to be a close low-scoring one.
Plays: Raiders (pk) and Under 52
