The Pittsburgh Steelers went into the 2016 NFL season with high expectations, but fell short of the Super Bowl, losing to the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship Game. Injuries to quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, running back LeVeon Bell, and the suspension of wide receiver Martavis Bryant, prevented the Steelers from finishing with the best record in the AFC.
Both Roethlisberger and Bell are expected to be in the opening day lineup, as well as Bryant, who has been conditionally reinstated by the commissioner. If Roethlisberger and Bell can stay healthy, while Bryant stays sober, the Steelers will have the best offense in the NFL, which will spell trouble for their opponents.
In this article I’m going to look at the various futures bets you can make on the Pittsburgh Steelers 2017 season. I’ll look at their Super Bowl odds, as well as their odds to win the NFC East, total wins and their week 1 game.
I’ll be using the odds from Bovada.lv, our top rated sportsbook for American bettors (full review here). The odds may vary at different sites.
To Win Super Bowl
- Steelers +1200
The Steelers are tied with the Dallas Cowboys with the third best odds of winning the Super Bowl. The New England Patriots (+375) and the Green Bay Packers (+750) are the only teams with better odds of winning the Lombardi Trophy this year.
Even though the Patriots are heavy favorites in the AFC, the Steelers have what it takes to defeat them. Offensively, Pittsburgh can keep up with any team in the NFL, however, their defense has been an issue for the past three seasons. Last year, their defense, which was one of the youngest in the league, showed a lot of promise. With another year of experience behind them, expect them to be much better than they were last year which is why there is more value betting in the Steelers than the Patriots this season.
To Win AFC North
- Baltimore Ravens +175
- Cincinnati Bengals +250
- Cleveland Browns +3300
- Pittsburgh Steelers +110
In the AFC North, Pittsburgh’s biggest competition are their bitter rivals, the Baltimore Ravens. Last season, Baltimore finished 8-8 but still managed to get a win against the Steelers. This year, Pittsburgh needs to avoid losing to teams they should defeat because losing three games can prevent them from having home field advantage, which is something they will need if they want to dethrone the Patriots.
Regular Season Total Wins
- Over 10.5 -115
- Under 10.5 -115
Last year, the Steelers won 11 games despite a stretch in which they lost four consecutive games. If they can avoid another midseason slump this year, there is no reason they can’t win at least 11 games. Fortunately for the Steelers, they only play five teams that made the playoffs last season.
Steelers Week 1 Betting Lines
The Steelers will kick off the season on the road against the Cleveland Browns. The point spread for the game is -9 in favor of Pittsburgh. The over/under for total points scored is 47.5 at -110.
The Steelers defeated the Browns in both meetings last year, and the Browns are expected to be worse this year so taking Pittsburgh on the spread is the smart play.
Play: Steelers -9
What do you think about Big Ben and the Steelers’ chances to win the Super Bowl this year? Do you think they have what it takes to topple the Patriots?
