Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel reigning world champion consolidated his lead at the top of the drivers’ leaderboard in Bahrain with a victory over the Louts pair Kimi Raikkonen and Romain Grosjean, taking advantage Fernando Alonso’s rear wing problems, which led to him finishing the race in eighth. This weekend, the European season kicks off, signaling the fact that the 2013 Formula One season is well under way.

All of the teams are expected to bring a host of changes to their cars in Barcelona, where most of the teams held their pre-season testing. On a track all the teams know well, this race may prove to be decisive in ascertaining whether the changes they’ve made and developed since the beginning of the season prove to be successful, and could go a long way in determining their prospects for the rest of the season.
The Williams of Pastor Maldonado won last year’s race surprisingly, in what was a frantic beginning of the 2012 season. This season, it has been marginally more measured, though it still remains difficult to determine who will be the strongest outfit on any given weekend.
Red Bull boss Christian Horner is not getting carried away with their lead in both the drivers and constructors championships, and knows that everything could change in a matter of weeks.
‘Ferrari are strong, Lotus have a good car, and the Mercedes certainly over a single lap is very strong,” said Horner. “The rest are a step behind. It’s close, it’s tight and I’m sure it’s going to move around from circuit to circuit as we head back to Europe.’
Qualifying has thrown up some interesting results in the opening stage of this season, with Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton claiming top spot in Bahrain. Vettel has the shortest odds, followed by Alonso, who has not claimed pole in a while, but the driver that presents some value, and who has arguably the most to prove following the early stages of the season, is Mark Webber, who is at 8/1 to claim quali.
With regard to the race, Vettel is again the favourite, but expect these odds to shift as the weekend progresses and the starting grid is decided.
