The 2014 Winter Olympics Curling tournaments begin in just over a weeks time in Sochi, Russia. The 10 teams competing for their countries would have just qualified a few months ago, so they should all be on top of their games. Let’s take a look at the odds for both the Men’s and Women’s tournaments.
Mens Curling – Winter Olympics Odds
- Canada 1.57
- Sweden 5.00
- Great Britain 6.50
- Norway 9.00
- Switzerland 11.00
- Denmark 26.00
- China 34.00
- Germany 51.00
- USA 67.00
- Russia 101.00
In Vancouver four years ago the Canadian Men rink led by skip Kevin Martin took home the gold. Martin simply dominated the tournament finishing with a perfect 9-0 record. That year Norway finished with the silver after compiling a 7-2 record, while Switzerland went home with the bronze.
This year Brad Jacobs will be Canada’s hope to win gold after winning the Canadian Olympic Trials. He is currently Canada’s best curler based on recent results, so it was a good thing for Canada he pulled out the win in the Trials. All of that said one loss and the gold medal could be going to Sweden, Great Britain or Norway.
Womens Curling – Winter Olympics Odds
- Canada 2.20
- Sweden 3.00
- Great Britain 3.50
- USA 17.00
- Switzerland 21.00
- China 26.00
- Denmark 34.00
- Russia 34.00
- Japan 51.00
- South Korea 81.00
Jennifer Jones won the Canadian Womens Olympic trials and will be the favourite heading into Sochi. She played amazingly at the trials and a similar performance should net her the gold in Sochi. Rachel Homan was the top Canadian team heading into the trials, but some slips and a couple crucial losses resulted in her losing in the semi-final.
At the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, Canada finished with silver, after losing the gold medal game to Sweden. Cheryl Bernand was Team Canada’s skip at the tournament and she was 8-0 heading into the gold medal game before slipping to the Swedish team that was 6-2 heading into the finals.
Sweden has now won 2 Olympic womens curling golds in a row and will look to make it three in Sochi. The odds indicate that either Canada, Sweden or Great Britain will win gold and I agree with this assessment as these three teams are far and away superior to the other rinks. Canada’s Olympic trials would have likely been more difficult to win than this Olympic gold medal, but a duplicate performance is never guaranteed.
Tournament Schedule
