Bet on New England Patriots Vs Cincinnati Bengals Week 5

pats ben

The New England Patriots are coming off a blowout loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.  The Patriots looked completely over matched and out of sorts against Kansas City. The Chiefs scored at will against the Patriots’ defense that looked out of gas after the first quarter. The Patriots offense for the fourth week in a row couldn’t protect Tom Brady. Brady’s performance was also mediocre missing receivers and throwing in to heavy coverage on multiple occasions. The Patriots have struggled against teams with dominant rushing attacks and it won’t get any easier against Giovani Bernard. Also, this could be the week that the Bengals get rookie Stephen Hill involved. When the Patriots have faced complimentary backs, such as in Miami and Kansas City, they’ve struggled mightily. If the Bengals can run on the Patriots then they’ll win easily.

The Cincinnati Bengals are coming off the bye week with something to prove. When the Bengals travel to Gillette stadium on Sunday night they’ll be looking to separate themselves from the rest of the AFC. The Bengals will be looking to avoid a trap game against a weaker Patriots opponent. The Patriots are reeling after Monday night’s blowout loss to the Chiefs. Patriots fans and the national media alike have gone into crisis mode. The Bengals will approach this game as if the Patriots are the perennial powerhouse of yesteryear. Despite New England’s poor performance thus far, a win in Foxborough would be a decisive victory on national television.

Team Breakdowns

Patriots: New England should throw away the film from last weeks loss in Kansas City. Bill looks to have moved on and his focus is on how to stop the Bengals. In the NFL, Cincinnati is as complete a team as any. New England’s offensive-line looked completely unprepared for the Chiefs pass-rush. The Bengals have as good, if not better, defensive front and the Patriots will need to solidify their offensive-line if they have any chance of pulling off the win at home on Sunday night. So far his season, the only Patriots who have consistently showed up are receiver Julian Edelman and special teams captain Mathew Slater. The Patriots offense is perhaps its weakest unit under Bill Belichick and Tom Brady. In the past, Brady has done more with less, however, the offensive-line was always accountable. So far, the offensive-line that starts two rookies doesn’t look up to the task. If the Patriots are going to win, they’ll need to rely heavily on the defense and special teams to carry them.

Bengals: Cincinnati is perhaps the best team in the NFL outside of the Seattle Seahawks. What separates these two teams is coaching. Marvin Lewis has been the Bengals coach for the better part of the last decade, and still has yet to make a deep playoff run. Some question Lewis’ ability to win in the big moments. Historically, the Bengals under Lewis and Dalton have not fared well in prime time games. If the Bengals are to beat the Patriots they’ll need to out coach them. With two weeks to prepare for this game, expect the Bengals to have a solid game plan.

Free Pick

The Patriots under Bill Belichick have rarely lost two games in a row. This Patriots team, however, lacks any offensive explosion. It’s not a well constructed offense at all. Even with Tom Brady’s inevitable decline, he’s still a solid quarterback capable of winning games in this league. The Patriots will have to rely heavily on their defense and special teams to give them manageable field position. This Patriots offense requires a short field if they have any chance of reaching the end-zone. To be successful, the Patriots defense will need to create turnovers. When the Patriots defense plays like they did against Kansas City, this team has no shot at winning. The Bengals don’t turn the ball over a lot and if they can protect the Andy Dalton and win the turnover battle, the Patriots will struggle again to put points on the board. The most crucial part of the game will be what the Patriots do on third-downs. All season, the Patriots have struggled to stop teams on third-down and on offense they’ve struggled to convert for first-downs. If the Patriots find away to solve their third-down woes, then they’ll have a real shot at the upset. Right now, the Patriots are slight underdogs at home which almost never happens in the Belichick era. It might be a long shot, but the Patriots will bounce back in a nail biter.
