I finally got one correct this postseason with the Royals 2-1 victory last night. You can see my previous picks here. Tonight is game 4 of the National League Championship series between the St. Louis Cardinals and the San Francisco Giants.
2014 NLCS Game 4: St. Louis Cardinals @ San Francisco Giants – Giants lead 2-1
The San Francisco Giants look to take a commanding 3-1 lead in their best of 7 NLCS with the St. Louis Cardinals. Yesterday the Giants were victorious 5-4 in 10 innings as shortstop Brandon Crawford scored the winning run on an errant throw by Cardinals reliever Randy Choate. San Francisco put 4 runs across home plate in the bottom of the 1st and then didn’t score again until the bottom of the 10th. Reliever Sergio Romo picked up the win as he pitched just 0.1 of an inning and didn’t allow an earned run nor a hit. Starter Tim Hudson pitched 6.1 innings as he gave up 4 earned runs on 7 hits. He struck out 5 batters. San Francisco pitchers Jeremy Affeldt, Santiago Casilla, and Javier Lopez combined to pitch 3.1 innings while not allowing an earned run on 2 hits. Left-fielder Travis Ishikawa was 1 for 3 with 3 rbi’s. Right-fielder Hunter Pence was 1 for 4 with 1 run batted in and 1 run scored. He also struck out once. Crawford finished the game 0 for 3 with the one run scored and a walk. Choate got saddled with the loss (due to his error) as he pitched 0 innings while allowing the 1 unearned run on 1 hit and a walk. St. Louis starter John Lackey pitched 6 innings while allowing 4 earned runs on 5 hits. He struck out 3 and walked 1 batter. Relievers Marco Gonzales, Pat Neshek, and Seth Maness combined to pitch 3 innings and allowed no earned runs and no hits. Right-fielder Randal Grichuk hit his 2nd home run of the postseason as he was 1 for 4 with an rbi and a run scored. He also stuck out twice. Center-fielder John Jay was 3 for 5 with 2 runs scored. 2nd baseman Kolten Wong was 2 for 4 with 2 runs batted in. His hits were a double and a triple. Today’s starting pitchers are right-handed Shelby Miller (0-0 with a 3.18 era in 1 start this postseason) for the Cardinals and right-handed Ryan Vogelsong (0-0 with a 1.59 era in 1 start this postseason) for the Giants. Miller was the starter for game 4 of the NLDS vs the Dodgers. He got the no-decision as he pitched 5.2 innings while allowing 2 earned runs on 5 hits. He struck out 4 and walked 3 batters. During the regular season Miller was 10-9 with a 3.74 era and 127 strikeouts in 183 innings pitched. Vogelsong was the starter for game 4 of the NLCD vs the Nationals. He got the no-decision as he pitched 5.2 innings while allowing 1 earned run on 2 hits. He struck out 4 and walked 2 batters.
Cardinals vs Giants Prediction
You know things are going good for you when you win an NLCS game on a throwing error. That just seems to be the kind of thing that happens to the Giants in the postseason over the last several season. I won’t be surprised if they win tonight in some fluky way. It should be another tight game.
