The 2015 Kentucky Derby is just around the corner. We are only 10 days away from the biggest horse race of the year and the “Most Exciting 2 Minutes in Sports”. Most of the top horses are already in Churchill Downs getting used to the racetrack and ready to make a run at the Triple Crown this year.
There are three horses who are really the favourites heading into the Kentucky Derby and they are American Pharaoh, Dortmund and Carpe Diem.
Let’s take a look at the odds for all of the horses being given a 20/1 or better shot. These odds are taken from BetOnline.ag, which is a great sportsbook for people from around the world (including the USA) looking to bet on the Kentucky Derby online this year.

2015 Kentucky Derby Odds

There are the 8 horses with a 14/1 or better shot at winning this years Kentucky Derby according to BetOnline.ag.
American Pharaoh has the fastest 1 1/8 mile time so far in 2015 of these horses clocking in at 1:48.52. He has won every race he has entered, which is a total of 4 since last September.
Dortmund is another very strong horse, who has won each of the 6 races he has entered since last year. He also has been in higher profile races than American Pharaoh and has beaten Firing Line (14/1 at the Derby) twice already. The only knock against Dortmund is that his most recent time in the 1 1/8 mile race of 1:48.73 is slightly slower than American Pharaoh’s. You can also argue that because American Pharaoh has not been up against as high of quality of horses at Dortmund that he may have another gear that he hasn’t showed yet.
Carpe Diem at 5/1 is one that I’m staying away from. He’s won 4 of the 5 races he’s entered, but his time of 1:49.77 in the 1 1/8 mile is quite a bit slower than the other two favourites here.
Materiality at 19/2 is one to keep an eye on. This horse won the Florida Derby, which can’t be overlooked. The time of 1:52.30 is quite a bit slower than the other horses, but the Florida Derby win shows this horse can win on the big stage.
My Play: Dortmund at 4/1.
I like Dortmund heading into this race. He’s proven that he’s a winner at a lot of big races and he may also have another gear considering he’s never lost.
