My Pick
Last season, the Broncos ended the Patriots season in the AFC Championship game, en route to winning the franchise’s third Super Bowl. This year, with Peyton Manning retired, the Patriots will be hoping for a different outcome, and will need to be at their best if they want to earn home field advantage in the AFC playoffs.
At 11-2, the Patriots currently have the best record in the AFC, but the Kansas City Chiefs are just one game behind them, which means they can’t afford to slip up like they did last year, losing home field advantage to the Broncos thanks to a late season slump.
The Broncos started the season very well, winning six of their first eight games, since then the team has gone 2-3, and fighting to hold off the Miami Dolphins and Baltimore Ravens for the final spot in the playoffs.
Denver’s struggles are due to the lack of experience the team has at the quarterback position. Trevor Siemian was named the starter during the preseason, and performed well enough to lead the team to an 8-5 record, however, the team is currently holding on to the final playoff spot in the conference, and can’t afford to lose this game.
Denver’s defense has been outstanding for most of the season, but they will have their work cut out for them against a Patriots offense that’s one of the best in the NFL this season. While their defense has been keeping them alive, the offense needs to step up and do its part if they intend to defeat the Patriots this weekend.
Tom Brady is coming off one of his best performances of the season after defeating the Baltimore Ravens on Monday night. He will have to be even better against the Broncos who will be sending a pass rush on almost every down to disrupt Brady’s rhythm and force him to turn the ball over, like they did in the AFC Championship Game.
The Broncos will also have to figure out a way to slow down LeGarrette Blount, who is having a career season and currently leads the league with 14 rushing touchdowns. If they can stop the run, they will have a good chance to win the game because they can turn their attention to Brady, who will be forced to throw more than head coach Bill Belichick would like.
Final word…
Despite their struggles in Denver, the Patriots are the better team and are going up against an inexperienced quarterback, so I’m picking New England to win the game.
