Sports Betting in Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska

Kansas launched regulated sports betting on September 1st, 2022. There are now six regulated sportsbooks active in the state and ready to take bets on the NBA this season.

In Nebraska, sports betting is legal, but the framework for allowing regulated sportsbooks to enter the market is still being worked on. The 2021 bill also only allows for in-person betting, so allowing mobile betting would have to be revisited by regulators in the future. The two War Horse Casinos, Caesars Sportsbook at Harrah’s, and the Grand Island Casino Resort are the only four locations in Nebraska where residents can place legal sports bets in the state. It could still be years before regulated online sports betting arrives in the state.

In Missouri it is still not legal to operate a sportsbook in the state. At the time of this update they are still counting the ballots from Amendment 2 that was voted on at the polls for the 2024 US Election. If the Amendment passed then sports betting will be legalized in Missouri and the regulated betting market will launch within a year.

Residents of Nebraska and Missouri can still bet on NBA games through offshore betting sites that are licensed and regulated outside of the USA. Both Bovada.lv and BetOnline.ag fall into this category, while accepting American players. Kansas residents also have the option to play at both sites if they prefer offshore to the regulated sportsbooks in the state.

Common NBA Bets

The three NBA bets that take the majority of betting handle are the spread, money line and over/under. You will find these three bets featured for all NBA games at Bovada.lv.

Point Spread

The point spread is the most popular bet for every NBA game. The sportsbook will set a spread in order to handicap the game. The favorite must win by more than the spread amount, while the underdog must either win the game outright or lose by fewer points than the spread.

In this example the Milwaukee Bucks are 8 point favorites, as indicated by the (-8). They must win the game by 9 or more points for a spread bet on the Bucks to win. The Bulls are 8 point underdogs (+8). Chicago must either win the game outright or lose by 7 or fewer points for a spread bet on the Bulls to win. If the Bucks win by exactly 8 points then the spread bets would push and wagers would be refunded.

Money Line (To Win)

A money line bet is simply a wager on which team wins the game outright. The odds will indicate the risk vs reward of betting on either team. Betting on the favorite will win less money than betting on the underdog.

In this example the Bucks are -325 favorites, which means you would have to bet $325 to win $100 betting on the Bucks. The Bulls are +270 underdogs, so a $100 wager on Chicago would win $270 if they pull off the upset.

Over/Under (Totals)

The over/under, also known as the total, is a bet on the number of points scored by both teams in the game. The sportsbook will set at total and you can bet on whether the amount of points scored will be over or under this amount.

In this example the over/under is set at 238.5 points. Over bets would win if 239 or more points are scored in the game, while under bets would win if 238 or fewer points are scored.
