The World Juniors are set to begin in UFA, Russia on boxing day and this years tournament has a little bit of extra excitement behind it because of the NHL caliber players that will be participating from some of the favorites. The biggest name in the tourney will be Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, who already had a successful season in the NHL for the Edmonton Oilers last year. This is just one of many players who likely wouldn’t be in Russia this year if the NHL lockout wasn’t taking place.
Gold Medal Winner Odds
Here are the odds:
- Canada +150
- Russia +225
- Sweden +375
- USA +450
- Finland +650
- Czech Republic +3500
After those top 6 countries, the other four really don’t have a shot.
Canada has the most star studded lineup, but that doesn’t always translate into wins at the World Juniors. These stars will need to come together along with strong goaltending for Canada to claim their first gold in 4 years. The USA are looking to bounce back after a poor showing last year and they will have a strong team, as will the Finns who have some top prospects on the team. Russia is lead by Nail Yakupov and should be a force to be reckoned with, while Sweden is missing some of their experienced players from last year and they aren’t really expected to be gold medal threats.
