The spread, to win (money line) and total (over/under) odds are the three popular bets to make on a game.
- Spread – In this example Colorado State is a -2 point favorite. Colorado State must win by 3 or more points to cover the spread. Virginia can win the game outright or lose by 1 point. If Colorado State wins by exactly two points, then the spread bets would push (be returned).
- Win – Also known as the money line, this is simply a bet on which team will win the game outright. The odds determine the risk vs reward for betting on either team. In the above example you would have to risk $140 to win $100 betting on Colorado State, while a $100 bet on Virginia would win $120 if they pulled off the minor upset.
- Total – The oddsmaker will set a total number of points to be scored in the game by both teams. You can bet on whether the total points will be over or under this set amount.
